If you are getting solar installed in Calgary, the roof underneath is the one part of the project nobody quotes on. Here is why that matters and what it costs to get wrong.
A solar quote covers panels, inverter, racking, labour and permits. What it does not cover, and what most installers will not raise unprompted, is the condition of the surface they are bolting all of that to.
That is not dishonesty. It is scope. Your solar company sells solar. The roof is somebody else's problem right up until the day it becomes yours.
So it is worth asking the question yourself, before anything gets fastened down: how many years does this roof have left, and does that number match the 25 years I am about to expect from these panels?
If the roof is newer, you are fine. Put the panels on and stop reading. If the roof is somewhere in the middle of its life, which describes most Calgary homes getting solar right now, the two timelines do not line up, and that gap has a price.
The surface underneath is the part the solar quote leaves out.
Say the roof gives out in year seven. The panels are fine. They are not the problem and they will happily run another eighteen years. But they are in the way, and every one of them has to come off before a single shingle can be touched.
Call it $21,000 to $38,000, and almost none of it was in anyone's plan. The panel removal line is the part that surprises people, because it buys you nothing. You are paying to lift equipment off and put the same equipment back.

Dried out, not worn through. This is the stage where treatment still works.
Asphalt shingles fail here for a specific reason. They lose the oils that keep them flexible. UV drives it, and Calgary's freeze and thaw cycle accelerates it, because a brittle shingle moving through a temperature swing cracks where a flexible one just flexes.
Once that starts, the granules let go. You see them in the gutters first. Then edges curl, then cracks open, then water finds a way in.

Treatment is not the answer for every roof, and putting it on a roof that is genuinely finished would be a waste of your money.
In those cases the honest advice is to replace the roof first and then put solar on a new one. We will tell you that at the assessment rather than sell you something that will not hold.
That last one is the useful question. A good installer will give you a direct answer.
