Your Panels Are Good for 25 Years. Is the Roof Under Them?

Treating the shingles under and around a solar array adds 10 to 15 years of roof life, so the roof and the system finish together instead of the roof giving out first.

Free. In person. No pressure. If your roof does not qualify, we tell you that too.

The problem

Panels Outlast Shingles. That Is the Whole Problem.

A solar system is built for about 25 years. A Calgary asphalt shingle roof has a working life of roughly 20 to 25 years, and plenty of roofs are already halfway through that when the panels go on. Hail, chinook freeze-thaw cycles and UV pull the oils out of asphalt here faster than in most of the country.

That mismatch is the whole issue. If the roof goes first, the array has to come off so the roof can be replaced, then go back on. None of that was in anyone’s budget.

  • Full roof replacement in Calgary runs $18,000 to $25,000
  • Taking an array off and putting it back adds $3,000 to $12,500
  • You lose $300 to $800 of generation while the work runs
  • Total unplanned exposure: $21,000 to $38,000

Where you are now

Two Situations, One Fix

The panels are not up yet

This is the cheap version. We treat the shingles first, on a bare roof with nothing in the way, and your installer then mounts the array on a surface that carries a written 10 to 15 year warranty. One day of work, before anything gets complicated.

The panels are already up

We treat the exposed shingle around and between the panel rows. No panel removal, no electrical work, no interruption to generation. The roof under the array is the part that was going to fail first, and this is how you buy it another decade.

The numbers

What It Costs to Do It Now Versus Later

Figures below are Calgary averages on a 2,500 sq ft roof. Your own number depends on size, pitch and the condition the shingles are actually in, which is what the free assessment is for.

If the roof fails under the array

  • Roof replacement: $18,000 to $25,000
  • Panel removal and reinstall: $3,000 to $12,500
  • Lost generation during the job: $300 to $800

Total: $21,000 to $38,000, on top of what the solar system cost in the first place.

If you treat it now

  • GoNano NuRoof treatment: about $3,750
  • Panel removal needed: no
  • Written warranty: 10 to 15 years

Total: about $3,750, and the roof and the array now finish on roughly the same horizon.

What it is

Why It Can Go On Around the Panels

GoNano NuRoof is not paint and it is not a surface sealant. It is a nano-penetrating treatment that soaks into the shingle itself, restoring flexibility and adding a water-shedding barrier from within the material.

That is exactly why it works around an existing array. There is no film building up on top, nothing that needs to bridge under a panel, and no reason to lift hardware to reach the surface that matters.

  • Applied in a single day, around the panels
  • No panel removal and no electrical work
  • No dust, no odour, no tear-off bin on the driveway
  • Written warranty of 10 to 15 years on the treated surface
  • Better resistance to water, UV and freeze-thaw
The visit

How It Works

1. Free roof assessment

We come out, get on the roof, and check the shingle condition around the array. No charge, and no obligation at the end of it.

2. One day of treatment

If the roof qualifies, the treatment goes on in a single visit. Your system keeps generating the whole time.

3. Written warranty

You get the warranty in writing, with the term set by the condition the roof was in when we treated it.

Being upfront

Sometimes the Answer Is No

If the shingles are already past the point where treatment does anything useful, we will tell you. A roof that is genuinely failing needs replacing, and the honest advice there is to deal with it properly rather than spend money delaying it by a year.

About half the roofs we look at do not need treating yet. We say so, and you have had a free inspection of the roof under your array either way.

Questions

Solar and Your Roof, Answered

Do the panels have to come off?

No. We treat the exposed shingle around and between the panel rows. There is no panel removal and no electrical work involved in the treatment itself.

Does it interrupt my power generation?

No. The system keeps running while we work. There is nothing to disconnect.

Should I treat before or after the panels go on?

Before, if you have the choice. A bare roof is quicker and there is nothing in the way, so it is the cheaper version of the same job. After is still very much worth doing.

What about the shingle directly under a panel?

That is the part of the roof already most sheltered from UV and hail. The exposed runs around and between the rows are where the weathering actually happens, and that is what we treat.

How long is the warranty?

Between 10 and 15 years on the treated surface, with the exact term set by the product used and the condition of the roof at the time we treat it. You get it in writing. Full detail is on our warranty page.

What does it cost?

About $3,750 on an average 2,500 sq ft Calgary roof. Size, pitch and condition move that number, which is why the assessment is free and ends with a firm price rather than a guess.
