Take a walk through Drake Landing, Cimarron or Air Ranch and study the rooflines. On house after house, the south slope looks years older than the north. More fading. More curling shingles. More thin patches where granules used to be.
The sun does that. South slopes take direct UV all year, plus the glare bouncing off snow through winter. UV aging bakes the oils out of asphalt shingles until they go brittle and start shedding granules.
